Inheemse slang bestrijdt invasieve kikker op Aruba

De Baker’s kattenoogslang is een welkome plaagbestrijder op Aruba. Naast kakkerlakken en muizen blijkt de slang ook de invasieve kikker Sapo te vangen en op te eten. Deze kikker heeft een negatief effect op de plaatselijke fauna. De Baker’s kattenoogslang houdt van vochtige omstandigheden en komt ook veel voor in tuinen. Gelukkig is de slang is ongevaarlijk voor de mens. De Baker’s kattenoogslang komt alleen voor op Aruba.

Beauty in Aruba: Santanero & Sapo
Aruba’s snake Santanero is often depicted as Aruba’s natural pest control. This snake is basically harmless and quite docile. It loves the more humid locations and can often be found in gardens among plants. The ‘pest control’ nickname is due to the prey it hunts: cockroaches (kakkerlakken) and other insects, mice and as this picture depicts, even frogs.
The frog in this picture is the Sapo, an invasive species that has a negative impact on Aruba’s fauna. So once again the added value of our Santanero is proven. The snake can grow up to 70 centimeters in length and about as broad as your thumb. Aruba’s Santanero is an endemic subspecies and can be found nowhere else in the world. All the more reason why our Santanero should be a protected species in Aruba.
